I’ve been told that the scent from Eucalyptus tree can be a
deterrent to flies. We have a conservatory that becomes a
haven to flies in the summer months. What variety of Eucalyptus
tree would be effective for the purpose and suitable for a bright,
hot conservatory?
Eucalyptus oil is a regular part of many fly deterrents and,
although there’s no guarantee that it will keep flies at bay, a
eucalyptus tree certainly won’t encourage them. The following
are good for conservatories so long as they get plenty of light
without any direct southern light: E. coccifera E. Crenulata
E. glaucescens E. nicholii E. perriniana E. pulverulenta and E. vernicosa. They need to
be cut back hard – down to six inches above the soil – every two years and given a
balanced liquid feed every month or so. They’ll look good even if they don’t make an
impression your fly problem.

Having trouble with French gardening terms?
You need a copy of The Hadley Pager Glossary of Gardening and
Horticultural Terms (French-English & English-French: 13.27€ in paperback)
The publisher says this revised third edition now contains nearly two
thousand terms together with appended lists of the commoner birds and
butterflies found in France. The glossary covers substantially the majority
of garden plants and shrubs, as well as fruit, trees, herbs, vegetables,
procedures, equipment, pests, etc. This glossary should prove invaluable
to those embarking on gardening or horticultural activities in France or other
French speaking regions, as well as to naturalists, and translators.
