The weather in Aix-en-Provence is generally mild and pleasant even though it is positioned on the northern edge of the Mediterranean coast. Aix-en-Provence is located in central Provence, near Marseille and about a half hour drive to the Mediterranean sea. The Provence region is in the south of France and borders the Mediterranean.
The Alps mountain range protects Provence from weather fronts approaching from the north and results in a relatively dry climate. The dryness is primarily because of the famous Mistral winds that blow from the north, sometimes for weeks on end.
The wind is more common in the winter and spring seasons, sometimes reaching force 10 levels (48-55 knots). In the Summer, the Mistral can cool the sea temperature by 18° F (10° C) overnight.
The best time to visit Provence is from May to October. However, temperatures can be a little high in the summer, with July being the hottest month with an average high temperature of 82° (28° C). January is the coldest month with an average high temperature of 50° F (10° C).
We’ll describe the seasonal weather in three Provence city: Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, and Nice. This information describes the expected weather in more detail and provides some weather-related guidance on clothing and other topics.

After the heat of the summer, the Fall brings welcome relief. However, along with the cooler temperatures, the rain also arrives. It’s not exactly a monsoon, but you’ll want to be prepared for the wetter season by bringing an umbrella and other wet weather gear. By December the temperature will be relatively low, so you’ll want to bring a heavier jacket, gloves and a hat.
